HOT DOG: A GROUP SHOW

"Get 'em while they're hot! Red hot! Dachshunds!"

"Historians believe its beginnings can be traced to the era of the notorious Roman emperor Nero, whose cook, Gaius, may have linked the first sausages. In ancient Rome, it was customary to starve pigs for one week before the slaughter. As the legend goes, Gaius was watching over his kitchen when he realized that one pig had been brought out fully roasted, but somehow not cleaned. He stuck a knife into the belly to see if the roast was edible, and out popped the intestines: empty because of the starvation diet, and puffed from the heat. According to legend, Gaius exclaimed, "I have discovered something of great importance!" He stuffed the intestines with ground game meats mixed with spices and wheat—and the sausage was created."

A hot dog is something greater than the sum of its parts. With this exhibition we hope to achieve some of the magic that is encapsulated in the food that inspired it. Without pretense, this selection of work builds upon itself in aesthetic intensity. Flavors mixing and matching, the crunch of relish, the tang of sauerkraut, acidity, high sodium, all slapped up on the wall together.

On the couch, over a bonfire, at the local park Sabrett, perhaps at a baseball game, or in the candle lit corner of a Beerhall in Frankfurt; the dog encapsulates a myriad of experiences and modalities. A timeless classic, it is a staple dish bred from necessity and ingenuity, an international food of the people, and an American staple that transcends definition. It is an experience.

Drizzle with mustard, top high with relish, and take a bite. Think of those summer nights on the beach of Coney Island, a Nathan's dachshund in hand. The gulls swooping overhead, hoping to take a bite of the toasted potato roll, looking for pieces of crumbs to call their own. Remember the backyard bonfires, dogs roasting over the open flame, charring and crackling as the skin pops in the heat. Breath in your surroundings. Take a sip of an ice cold beer and take another bite. Hot Dog: A Group Show.
